The Public Service Union of Belize is the second oldest public service union in the Caribbean. One of a trade union's main aim is to protect and advance the interests of its members in the workplace.

PSU committed to upgrading the social and economic conditions of members, the preservation of their rights and the provision of efficient and effective service to the public service.

Notice: Branch Annual Meeting & Elections

In accordance with Section 38 (7) of the PSU Constitution, the Annual Meeting of a Branch shall be held before the 1st day of March each year.

Using departmental liaison officers, grievance committees and its Industrial Relations Officer to facilitate the proper handling of grievances. Union members are reminded that they should notify the union in writing.

PARTICIPATION

Nominating representatives to the Public Service Commission. The Union participates to ensure the protection of worker’s rights and bargain for better terms and conditions of service for public officers.

LEGISLATION

Establishing ILO conventions representing the internationally accepted labour standards, the Trade Unions and Employers’ Organizations Act 2011 guarantees trade unions the right to collective bargaining with employers.

INFORMATION

Informing members of issues which can adversely affect them (Health and safety, social security etc). Based on feedback from the membership, the Union takes various steps to ensure that the membership views are heard.

Latest News: PUBLIC SERVICE UNION CONDEMNS MASS RESIGNATION ORDER FOR TERMINAL OFFICERS!

The Public Service Union (PSU) of Belize has issued a strong condemnation of the Ministry of Constitution and Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs, and Transportation for allegedly pressuring public officers at terminal management units to resign or face termination. The PSU claims this ultimatum is tied to plans to privatize bus terminal management, which violates labor laws and disregards the rights of public officers. The Union has called on affected employees not to resign, as doing so would forfeit their tenure, accrued service, and superannuation benefits. The PSU is demanding an urgent meeting with government officials to address the issue and ensure that any changes are handled lawfully, protecting workers’ rights and benefits.

Latest News: Public Service Union Secures New Allowances for Frontline Workers!

In a significant achievement for public service workers, the Public Service Union of Belize (PSU) has successfully advocated for the inclusion of new and increased allowances for members of the National Fire Service, National Emergency Management Organization, and the Ministry of Health and Wellness. These changes, approved by the Ministry of the Public Service and Disaster Risk Management with support from the Ministry of Finance, took effect on May 1, 2025, and are now formally documented in the Compendium of Allowances.

Key Allowances Now Included:

For the National Fire Service:
- Hazard (Danger) Allowance: $200 per month for all firefighters.
- Hazard (Wet and Dirty Conditions) Allowance: $300 per month for all firefighters.
- Availability (Quick Response) Allowance: $200 per month for firefighters assigned to EMS and certified paramedics.
- Increased Housing Allowance: $300 per month for transferred firefighters not provided with quarters.
For the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO):
- Availability (On-Call) Allowance: $150 per month for assigned officers.
- Hazard (Wet and Dirty Conditions) Allowance: $150 per month for assigned officers.
For the Ministry of Health & Wellness:
- Hazard (Danger) Allowance: $200 per month for Assistant Radiographers, Domestic Auxiliaries, Patient Care Assistants, Dental Surgeons, and Dental Assistants.

These allowances apply to both officers governed by the Government Worker Regulations and the Public Service Regulations, ensuring broad coverage across essential services.

Circular Memorandum 2 of 2026, signed by Chief Executive Officer Rolando Zetina, underscores the government’s recognition of the demanding and often dangerous work performed by these public officers. The PSU’s unwavering commitment to fair compensation and improved working conditions has once again yielded tangible results, reinforcing the union’s role as a vital advocate for Belize’s public servants.
